What is LEO?

UNUS SED LEO is a utility token issued by the Bitfinex exchange. It was created to address the financial challenges faced by the company. Bitfinex, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, encountered significant financial difficulties when $850 million of its funds were frozen by the Panamanian government in 2018. In response, the company launched an Initial Exchange Offering (IEO), during which the LEO token was released to compensate for the lost funds.

The token has several unique features that distinguish it from other cryptocurrencies. Firstly, Bitfinex commits at least 27% of its monthly revenue to repurchasing LEO tokens and subsequently burning them. This process will continue until fewer than 100 million tokens remain in circulation. The regular buyback and destruction of tokens demonstrate the exchange's financial stability and commitment to its users' interests. Secondly, LEO has been issued in two forms: as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain and on the EOS blockchain. This dual issuance enhances its accessibility and functionality across different cryptocurrency ecosystems.

Holding LEO entitles owners to significant trading fee discounts on the platform. Token holders can also enjoy reduced withdrawal fees for both cryptocurrencies and fiat money, priority customer support service, and early access to new products and services offered by the exchange.
